The Gulf Coast in Mississippi quickly became one of my family's favorite destinations. It is affordable, beautiful, fun, and away from crowds. The beaches are clear, shallow, and uncrowded. People are friendly and between Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Pass Christian, there is not shortage of things to do. Check out our top 5 below.
1. Beaches
The Mississippi Gulf Coast offers 62 miles of shoreline and 26 miles of powder-white sand beaches, along the Gulf of Mexico. The waters are usually shallow and warm, making this an ideal destination for families with younger children. Older kids will love water sport rentals, while parents can enjoy a cocktails and craft beers.
2. The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies
The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies is a research organization dedicated to education, conservation, and research on marine mammals in the wild and in captivity. Swim with dolphins/sting-rays, watch sea lions and dolphins live in person, or feed the birds in the atrium. Whether you want to learn, touch, swim, or watch a show The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies has something for everyone!
3. Beauvoir
Visit Jefferson Davis Home and Presidential Library and take a trip into the past. This tour is guided by a docent dressed in 19th century attire where you will learn about the history and culture of Mississippi in the late 1800's. For a special treat visit the gift shop for a great souvenir or toy!
4. Lynn Meadows Discovery Center
This was our favorite activity in Gulfport, MS. This school house has over 15,000 square feet of hands on exhibits including a Super Colossal Climbing Structure, Art Knows Anything Goes, The Dolan Avenue Depot, The Port, The Pet Vet, and more. With so many exhibits, this is a great place for the whole family to enjoy, relax, and learn.
5. World's Largest Rocker
The World's Largest Rocker is a fun roadside attraction. Take silly photos with the family and give the kids something to tell all their friends about at school. At 35-feet tall, this rocker is sure to impress everyone.
